Get Ready, Big Project Ahead!

Greetings Belfast Community Co-op Owners,

Thanks to your support since 1976, our beloved Co-op has grown and continues to thrive. Your commitment has kept our mission-driven store evolving over the decades, and now, we are getting ready to expand and renovate our store to meet the needs of our community.

Over the last six years, our Board of Directors and General Manager have researched a range of approaches to expansion–from building new, to relocating, to renovation. We’ve heard from you, our owners, in forums, focus groups, monthly Board meetings, a 2021 survey, our 2022 Annual Meeting, and multiple tabling events and online Q&A sessions.  We’ve worked with experts who have helped cooperatives across the country with projects like ours. All of this has resulted in a finely honed renovation plan that we can afford. We’ll have 30% more retail space for shelving and refrigeration, a freight elevator (finally!), updated HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, a new area for the Shop For Me program, and the top priority we’ve heard most often from owners  — an expanded deli and café! Check out Your Future Co-op for architectural plans and a series of online videos.

Since the first modern cooperative business was established in 1844, co-op members have pooled their resources to build better lives for workers and their communities. The next opportunity for Belfast Community Co-op owners to participate in that mission will come in the form of an invitation to invest in this vital project. You will be lending the Co-op money alongside a community development loan fund that facilitates socially responsible investing in cooperatives, community-oriented nonprofits, and worker-owned businesses in New England and New York. So stay tuned for more information!

In addition to investing, there will be many ways that you can contribute. Keep shopping at the Co-op through the renovation. Yes, the store will be open throughout. Encourage others to shop and join the Co-op as owners. Join the Board’s Owner Engagement Committee to help us connect with every one of our 4,800+ owners.  As always, we love to hear from you: please email us at
