The Soap Closet

Apr 30, 2020 | advocacy

The Belfast Co-op’s Common Cents group for May 2020 is the Soap Closet.  Every shopper may ’round-up’ their purchases at the Co-op to donate to our monthly recipient.

The Soap Closet is an all-volunteer organization founded in 2012 for the sole purpose of providing personal hygiene products to low-income individuals, families, children, and seniors in Waldo County. These are items that cannot be purchased with food stamps; e.g., dish soap, laundry detergent, deodorant, hand soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and toilet paper.

To donate or for assistance, call 207-218-4113 or email: spqwalsh@gmail.com

The group currently finances the distribution of these products through four food pantries (Northport, Searsport, Jackson, and Belfast); Meals on Wheels, and RSU 71 and RSU 3 school backpack programs. They also provide funds for the purchase of personal hygiene products or purchase and distribute products to the Public Health Nurse, General Assistance in Belfast, WCAP, and new entrants in the Sheriff’s Reentry Program.

All of the funds are raised through an annual appeal, grants, and programs such as Common Cents and are spent on products.

100% of all donations received through Common Cents go on to the groups.
