Reuse ME reusable packaging pilot at the Co-op
We are thrilled to announce that starting Monday, August 10th, the Belfast Community Co-op is officially joining forces with ReuseME, a research initiative from the University of Maine, to bring returnable, reusable coffee containers to our cafe!
Tired of the trash? Participating is as easy as checking out a library book. Here is how it works:
- Get Ready: Download the Recirclable app and create your free account before the launch on Monday, August 10th.
- Borrow: When you pay for your coffee, grab a metal cup and show the cashier your app confirmation to check it out.
- Enjoy: Take your drink on the go and enjoy your coffee.
- Return: Rinse your container and drop it off at any of our 10+ participating locations within two weeks.

About Reuse ME:
Researchers at the University of Maine have partnered with several coastal communities and the Reuse Maine Coalition to explore the potential of reusable takeout packaging to reduce waste and benefit local businesses and consumers. Restaurants in Bar Harbor, Bath, and South Portland are piloting reusable packaging systems with more being added like the Belfast Community Co-op. Customers can support the pilots by visiting participating businesses. The University of Maine research team is trying to better understand the variables that shape decisions about the adoption of reusable programs as well as those that influence success in specific communities. Our goal is to develop a decision support model for restaurants and municipalities that are considering the adoption of reusable packaging systems.
