This April, we are celebrating Earth Month! When you shop at the Belfast Community Co-op, you are buying into a better world: a democratic food system that makes the planet a more equitable and sustainable place for all. By choosing to support businesses that implement sustainability-focused initiatives, you contribute to meaningful change. Your choices help reduce environmental impact, support ethical sourcing, and strengthen local communities. Together, we can make a difference—one purchase at a time. Join us in celebrating Earth Month by making conscious choices that benefit our world today and for generations to come!

Buying Local reduces our carbon footprint as less fuel is required for transport. Minimizing reliance on large-scale industrial production helps to protect our planet, near & far.
Buying your items in Bulk reduces waste and the energy footprint required to make all the bottles, jars cans, & paperboard. Plus it’s cheaper because you’re not paying for the extra packaging!
Added bonus: you can bring your
own containers for bulk purchases! Just weigh them before you fill them!

Organic means the product contains no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides. Organic farms further help to conserve soil and aquifers through responsible stewardship.
The Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association is a local group that educates about and advocates for organic agriculture, upholding its role in a healthy environment, local food production, and thriving communities.

The production of organic cotton uses less energy, releases fewer greenhouse gases, and due to the improved soil quality, uses much less water. It supports a healthy ecosystem and does not use toxic chemicals.
Instead of using new grocery bags, you can reuse the cardboard boxes our products are shipped in. We also have “Leave a Bag – Take a Bag”. Instead of getting a new bag, reuse one that’s already here! Share your clean extras with us!

Many companies make donations to support the Rainforest Alliance, whose aim is to conserve biodiversity and promote sustainability. Clif Bar, Newman’s Own, Tom’s of Maine, Yogi Tea, Bixby Chocolate, & Justin’s Chocolate are just a few we carry.
We work to reduce waste by donating extra food and day-old items to local food pantries. We also donate expired produce to a local animal rescue group: Avian Haven.

Help us cut back on single-use plastic! We now have a “Bring it Back” metal silverware reuse initiative to help cut back on the accumulation of more plastic in our environment.
We compost our food waste and coffee grounds. A local company called “ScrapDogs Community Compost” picks up our compost for distribution to the community. They’ll pick up your compost too! Visit scrapdogs.com

We use Rolly Receipts EcoThermal register paper. It is BPA & BPS Free! For each case used they plant 1 tree via their partnership with One Tree Planted.
Everyone is welcome to shop at the Co-op; it is our mission and our pleasure to bring locally-sourced, reasonably priced, organic, and natural products to all.
Owned by you. Food for all.
