What is New Hope Midcoast?
Since 1981, New Hope Midcoast (formerly New Hope for Women) has offered support to people in Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox, and Waldo counties affected by domestic abuse and dating violence and has provided educational resources to assist communities in creating a safer and healthier future. New Hope Midcoast believes that a just and peaceful society must commit itself to confronting and overcoming all forms of oppression and violence.
New Hope Midcoast provides support, advocacy, prevention, and education services for individuals affected by domestic abuse, dating violence, and stalking. Advocacy services include our 24/7 helpline, hospital accompaniment, partnerships with Child Protective Services at the Department of Health and Human Services, group healing, legal services, emergency sheltering, transitional housing, community presentations, education for students and personnel in area schools, and trainings for mental health professionals, organizations and others.
Most people know New Hope Midcoast through our direct services to victim-survivors of domestic abuse, but it is also our goal to help stop abuse before it begins. We do this through local education and prevention programs: Trauma-informed presentations delivered to students K-12 in over 80 schools; Collaboration with various faith-based and community organizations; Volunteer opportunities.
Through our prevention and education programs, we strive to deepen the public’s understanding of domestic abuse, dating violence, and stalking. They are social justice and public health issues that impact individuals, families, and society as a whole. That means, in order to end abuse, we need to work to end all forms of oppression and challenge the cultural beliefs that foster them.
