The Belfast Co-op’s Common Cents group for September is The Farwell Project! ! Every shopper may ’round-up’ their purchases at the Co-op to donate to our monthly recipient. 100% of all donations received through Common Cents go on to each month’s group.
The Farwell Project is preserving a piece of Central Maine History by restoring historical community buildings in Thorndike Village.
Why donate to The Farwell Project?
Don’t let small towns go extinct! Thorndike village supported a department store, cheese factory, general stores, a car dealership, a cobbler, a lumber mill and two grain mills in 1960, but that all changed when the Farwell brothers retired and shut down the mill. The railroad stopped running and the stores closed. In 2015, after nearly six decades, a group of local artisans, writers, builders, and historians decided to buy the mill buildings to preserve them for future generations.
Today the old railroad town offers multi use community space including a historical museum, performance spaces, a furniture shop, and general store. The railroad station is open seasonally and brings folks to and from the Common Ground Fair.
