A letter from the Board President

Filling out my Common Cents voting ballot the other day spurred a moment of gratitude–how lucky we are to live in a community with so many inspiring organizations! As Owners of the Belfast Community Co-op, we nominate and choose which programs will benefit from check-out counter round-ups each month. This powerful act of collective generosity ripples out around us to the tune of over $65,000. It says so much about who we are as a community.

I serve on the Board of Directors of the Co-op to support this thing we are doing together as a community: shopping with our ethics, and helping each other out. On the Board, we take care of the governance aspect of this shared endeavor: we set, improve and monitor policies to ensure that the Co-op continues to grow and evolve in a positive direction. If this is something you might be interested in doing, please check out the Board candidate information on the website—candidate applications are due November 15^th!

There will be a Board Candidate Information Session on Monday, Nov. 3 at 5:30 pm in the 3^rd floor conference room of the Belfast Free Library. Thank you for being a part of the Co-op—whatever this part is–a Co-op shopper, owner-member, worker, or fan. I believe that each step we take can make our community healthier, safer and more kind. Together, as a Co-op, we are manifesting a vision for a fair, inclusive and ethical source of nourishment.

October’s Common Cents group is Friends of the Belfast Free Library.

The Friends of the Belfast Free Library volunteer their time and energy to raise funds to support library programs, technology upgrades, and improvements to the library facility. Our group either funds in full or makes significant contributions to these endeavors.

Be sure to round up for this amazing group!

Common Cents voting has officially ended and we are busy tallying the votes! Stay tuned for the results announcing our 2026 Common Cents recipient next month!

The Board of Directors is seeking Board candidates for the 2026 election!

Have you ever wanted to make a difference in how our community accesses reliable, good local food? To be part of something bigger than just a grocery store? By joining the Belfast Community Co-op Board of Directors, you’ll help guide a democratic food system that works toward a healthier, more equitable future for all.
